SUMMER FLING TRIANGLE

Hey, crafters! It’s time for another crafternoon. Summer’s here again, and it’s time to bring out those flowy and fresh outfits! Make it more trendy with this week’s project: Summer Fling Triangle Shawl!

Shawls are popular for their ability to keep the chill off your shoulders on breezy summer evenings, and in air-conditioned spaces. You can even wear them like scarves! Summer Fling is an easy, garter stitch, asymmetrical triangle shawl, perfect for beach knitting, and romantic sunset walks. Join us, and dare your mind to create!

Things you’ll need:

  • DMC Acrylic Yarns – Knitty 4/Knitty Pop/Revelation (Size 4)

  • Knitting needle (US size 5, 3.75mm)

  • Tapestry needle

  • Stitch markers

  • Scissors

Gauge:

  • 24 stitches per 10cm / 4in on US size 5 needle (3.75mm) in garter stitch

Yardage:

  • 1,120yds (1024m)

Abbreviations:

  • K: Knit

  • P: Purl

  • YO: Yarn Over

  • BO: Bind Off

  • SSK: Slip one stitch, Slip the next, Knit together (by inserting the left needle through the front of the stitches and knitting them together)

  • K2TOG: Knit 2 Stitches Together

  • K”: Knit though the front of the stitch (then through the back of the same stitch to create one extra stitch)

  • YO: Yarn Over

  • CO: Cast On

  • ST(s): Stitche(s)

  • SL3WYIF: Slip 3 Stitches with the Yarn Held in Front

  • KYOTBL: Knit Yarn Over Through the Back Loop (to reduce the size of the hole made by the yarn over)

Instruction:

PART 1:

Step 1: Start by casting on 6 STS

Row 1: K”, K one, K”, SL3WYIF, turn (these 3 slipped stitches, which will be knitted on the next row for the i-cord edge)

Row 2: K to end

Row 3: K”, K”, K1, PM, YO, K to last 3 STS, SL3WYIF, turn

Row 4: K to YO, KYOTBL, SM, K to end

Row 5: BO2, K to M, SM, YO, K to last 3 STS, SL3WYIF, turn

Row 6: Same as Row 4. Repeat Row 3 to 6 four more times

PART 2:

Row 1: K”, K”, k1, SM, YO, K to last 7 STS, YO, K2TOG, K2TOG, SL3WYIF, turn

Row 2: K across until you reach YO right before marker, KYOTBL, SM, K to end

Row 3: BO2, K to M, YO, K to last 7 STS, YO, K2TOG, K2TOG, SL3WYIF, turn

Row 4: Same as Row 2. Repeat these last 4 rows 3 more times

PART 3:

  • On tooth 28 (from beginning of shawl) and on an odd row, follow the directions for the appropriate row using C1 until last 3 STS, do not cut C1, join C2, turn. Work the next 2 rows with C2, and the following 2 with C1. Continue alternating 2 rows with C2 and 2 rows with C1 while knitting in pattern until you have 14 teeth in this color combination .

  • On tooth 42 (from beginning of shawl), and an odd row, follow the directions for the appropriate row using C1 until last 3 STS, cut C1, and continue with C2 only, repeating the pattern rows. Until you have 36 teeth in C2.

  • On tooth 78 ( from beginning of shawl), repeat the color change process for C3, starting on an odd row, knit in pattern to the last 3 STS with C2, join C3 and alternate C2 and C3 for 16 teeth.

  • On tooth 94 (from beginning of shawl), an odd row, k to last 3 STS, cut C2 and continue with C3 alone for 24 teeth.

  • On tooth 118 (from beginning of shawl), repeat the color change process for C4, starting on an odd row, knit in pattern to the last 3 STS, join C4, and alternate C3 and C4 for 2 teeth.

  • On tooth 120 ( from beginning of shawl), and on an odd row, knit in pattern to the last 3 STS, cut C3, continue in pattern with C4 alone for 3 teeth.

  • Bo using an i-cord bind off as follows, at the beginning of your bind off row, cast on 3 STS using the knitted cast on and C4, *K2, SSK, return the 3 STS on the right needle. Repeat from * until you have bound off all STS.

  • Make 3 tassels using colors that will blend well with the points they will be attached to. Secure each tassel to its respective point.

  • Block shawl using blocking wires for the teeth edge, and pinning each wave to accentuate the wave effect.

TAKE NOTE:

  • Color changes always happen on an odd row.

  • The new color is joined right before the last 3 STS.

  • Colors are alternated for 2 rows each for a certain number of rows, and the old color is cut on an odd row, right before the last 3 STS of the row, and the next section in knitted in the new color.
